For centuries Asia has been fertile ground for warriors and rulers seeking to gain riches and glory. This program takes travelers to some of the region's most stunning historical highlights, to explore the temples, palaces and ruins that are all that remain of some of the world's greatest empires. Start with three nights in Bangkok, touring the city and nearby Ayuthaya. Visit the Royal Palace, and the excellent National Museum. Travel to Sukhothai, Thailand's earliest capital: today, the surrounding region is a wealth of temples and statuary. Fly to Yangon, to visit the Shwedagaon Pagoda, the city's spiritual and social heart. Travel to Bagan for three days amidst the temples, pagodas and remains of the awesome empire that flourished on the banks of the Irrawaddy, centuries ago. Touring also includes Mt Popa, with its sweeping views and nat temples. Return to Bangkok to visit Jim Thompson's house and Suan Pakkard Palace, both famed treasure houses of Asian antiquities. Fly to Phnom Penh to visit the National Museum and Silver Pagoda, teeming with Khmer art of the highest order. Fly to Siem Reap for three days at Angkor, the jewel in Indochina's crown. Finish off your journey with a night in Bangkok before your international departure.
